Why I’m active: Loes Gerringa

The environment and nature around us are essential to me.

At the beginning of my career, my research was linked to measures that could be taken. The idea that something would be done with the results was extremely motivating. Later, when climate change became known as a cause of changes in seas and oceans, mentioning the climate in a research proposal guaranteed funding. In stark contrast, little to nothing was done with the results of such research. For me and many colleagues, this is extremely frustrating and it prompted me to contact Scientist Rebellion. I am glad to feel that I can do something.

My research concerned dissolved heavy metals in seawater, with a focus on the (bio)availability of dissolved iron, an essential element for the food chain. Now retired, I am very concerned about the effects of climate change and ocean pollution on the environment.
